Staten Island's Martini Red to host Masharoo rock and art show
by Ben Johnson/Staten Island AWE
Friday June 12, 2009, 1:00 PM

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A lot of bands play Staten Island, but rarely is a local rock show well-coordinated with an offering of visual art alongside it.

The June 13 fest at Martini Red -- put on by indie label Mo35x Records -- is good news for anyone who likes to mix eye candy with ear candy.

Local surf rock gods The Recruders, featuring Advance illustrator Tom Wright, will team up with the dark folk of Jaclyn Shaw, the grungy intimacy of Clinical Trials, Queens alt-rockers Woof Woof and New Jersey garage rockers The Doughboys to offer varied rock 'n' roll entertainment. The brick walls, however, will be adorned with work in several different mediums by artists Michael Minto, Jackie Luv, Rudy Baker, Matt Troy, Happy Donutz, Rasputin Ovultine and Wright.

The Masharoo Go-Gogh B-Day Basharoo, celebrating Recruders drummer Mike Aquino's birthday, begins at 8 p.m. June 13 at Martini Red, 372 Van Duzer St., Stapleton. Admission: Free. More info: 718-442-0660, mo35xrecords.com, Martini-Red.com.
