DEA VOLUME FIVE: Rehydrating the Precious Fluids
Infinity Here We Cum!
2002 saw the disparate members of DEA knocking about their everyday
lives and getting over thier losses following the 911 catastrophe. Aloishondor
O'Brien Pignoli, multi instrumentalist, studio engineer and Polish Middle-Easterner,
put together a benefit concert for his close friend lost in the WTC
disaster, Anthony Tempesta, bassist, stock trader and all around crazy
guy. At this concert the former members of DEA were brought together
in the same room for the first time in several years. Little known underground
record company, mo35x RECORDS was there too, being represented by their
president Robert Hoole. Hoole was impressed by a cut he had heard on
a Staten Island radio compilation but thought the band did that one
song and disappeared, intimating once that, "If I had one band like
DEA on my roster. I could die a happy man." Sadly for years this goal
alluded him and, during that time, Hoole was very careful when crossing
streets. Recognizing Gespatcho Griddlecakes from DEA cover Artwork he
had encountered at a party given by Rudy Baker (remember him?), a while
back, he approached Spotch about what DEA was up too as of late. Spotch
had little to add but pointed to Happy and mentioned he was pestering
him earlier that evening about working on a new album DEA was trying
to get going, so Robert introduced himself and had a nice long chat
with Mr. Donuts.
Happy told Mr. Hoole about how, Bruno, Raspy and he, still had a fire
in the old belly to play together but with the lack of a bass player
that would join them in their endevoure, they were kept sidelined from
spewing the frontal assault, upon audiences, they would ordinarily have
caused as DEA. Hoole, catching Pignoli's eye over the multitudes of
benefit guests, after the benefit show, Robert yelled to Ali if he knew
of anyone that would be interested in the position of bassist in a new
DEA. Giving the "call-me" sign across the room to Robert Hoole, Shondor
went on with rapping up his fabulous benefit to his beloved friend and
collegue.
"That's a no-brainer", was Happy's response to Hoole's question of Shondor
Pignoli being acceepted as DEA's fourth bassist. "Why didn't we ask
him?" Bruno asked in bewilderment. Robert Hoole started impressing the
guys with his "can-do" attitude and started attending thier rehearsals,
which moved down the hall of Snug Harbour's music wing to Alouishondor's
double room. It was less colorful but gave them more room for acrobatics
and multiple coolers.
Early 2003, during one of Rasputin's side projects he came in contact
with the mysterious and dark, Lane Spark. Raspy was recording his version
of Blondie's "Dreamin'", with Whale of Woof Woof
on vocals when Shondor was called upon to get a female backing vocalist
to bolster the recording. Lane was brought into her first recording
session, after years recouperating from a high-wire accident while training
in Berlin with the Theatre of the Absurd, seems she didn't speak Prussian,
so when the other acrobat told her to leap she yelled "WHAT?", then
"oh" in recognition, missed the mark and . . .
Raspy liked Ms. Spark's attitude so much so that he pushed for her entry
into the newly reforming DEA. She easily won everyone over quickly with
her ruthlessly sarcstic tales of human debauchery, real and imagined,
and NY's first 5 piece trio was born.
Playing out songs never recorded but vaulted for years as well as those
found on their CD, Precious Fluids. DEA played
once during this volume at the Dock of The Bay, though not recorded
or well attended it was said, by those that did attend, to be one of
the groups best performances. As the story went, Happy and Rasputin
were psyched about the prospects of what Lane brought to the newly adorned
DEA but Bruno and Shondor had misgivings as some fans of the 100% testosterone
filled DEA were not buying Laney. So after neutral input on the subject
from the, somewhat new to DEA, Shondor and passive aggressive resistance
from Bruno, toward our heroine, Ms. Spark was already on shaky ground
when food poisoning sidelined our girl from an important benefit gig
the morning of the show marking her fate within the band and DEA was
back to 4 guys again.
